First week of the Spring Term

Happy New Year to the parents and children of 1S !

Despite the wintery weather trying its best to delay the start of term, we were still able to go ahead with our planned visit to the Manchester Art Gallery to view their Toy exhibition. This visit fits in with our Topic work for this term which is dedicated to toys. We discussed how toys had changed over the years and the children got the chance to see and play with a variety of old wooden and clockwork toys. In the classroom we have changed the role play area into a Toy Shop where the children have been busy buying and selling toys using the coins they have been learning about in their numercy lessons.

Last week of term – Arts Week

This week we have been busy making festive decorations, enjoying a visit from Father Christmas and watching the School Nativity play. We have also finished writing our class story based on Handa’s Hen. It’s called Handa’s Goat and includes all the children’s ideas and animal collages that they have been working on over the last couple of weeks. If parents would like to see a copy of the story it is posted up outside the classroom and is also available in the class reading area.We think this is a super example of the children’s literacy and creative work which coincides with our Arts Week celebrations.

Friday 11th December

This week 1S have been learning about other cultures by reading a story called Handa’s Hen which is set in Kenya. We made finger puppets of various African animals and wrote speech bubbles to describe them.  A selection of the children’s work has been put on display in the corridor outside the main hall and both staff and children from other classes have commented upon how wonderful they look. Below is a photo of the display board.

Thursday 26th November

This week in Literacy we have been writing different versions of a story based on the book ‘Grandpa, Grandpa’. The children have been looking at repetition, rhythm and rhyme.  Instead of ‘Grandpa, Grandpa, come with me. Lets go fishing for our tea’ the children thought of their own alternatives and listed items that they could buy for their tea.

Stephen Howse replaced some of the original words to read ‘Scot, Scot, come with me. Let’s go shopping for our tea. What will we shop for? What will we get? One small banana, two small apples, three small oranges. We got healthy.’ Stephen’s work fits in nicely with the launch this week of Birchfield’s healthy packed lunches. Well done Stephen.

In ICT the children have been using Tizzy’s Toolbox to move their turtle around the screen. Here is a picture of Ishrat Iman and Tiyanna Singh’s successful attempts to use the up, down, left, right keys to move around the screen missing the ball and shark obstacles.

Anti-bullying Week

This week the children of 1S have been discussing what makes a good friend and what we should do to help and support each other. The children came up with some great ideas for slogans for their anti-bullying badges that can also be used as fridge magnets.  Here are some examples  below :

“Be nice and share”, “Do not hit”, “Smile”.

We would also like to thank parents for showing their support for the BBC Children in Need appeal. 1S raised a magnificent £22.00 on non-school uniform day. More photographs of the day can be viewed at ‘Other Activities’.

Friday 13th November

This week 1S have been working hard learning the months of the year and days of the week. Well done to all of those children that can now say the twelve months of the year in order! In Literacy lessons we have been reading poems about Autumn and writing sentences about what we can see, hear and smell. Here are some examples of what we have been doing.

Language Day

On 25th September the children of 1S spent the day celebrating Languages Day. We made colourful Spanish flags and fans with Miss Smith. Our classroom looked very bright and festive at the end of the day with all the yellow and red decorations displayed around the room.

We also visited other ‘countries’ to learn about their language, food, music, dance and art.  These activities included tasting a chinese stir-fry and writing our names using the chinese alphabet; learning how to say hello “Bonjour” and goodbye “Au Revoir” in french; practising an Irish dance and making the Leaning Tower of Pisa out of marshmallows and spagetti!

Here are some pictures that we took of our Language Day celebrations:
